Introduction

Subcutaneous injections are given beneath the epidermis into the loose fat and connective tissue underlying the dermis and are used for administering small doses of non‐irritating water‐soluble substances such as insulin or heparin

There are two primary locations that you can self-administer a subcutaneous injection. These are the abdomen and the thigh.

  1. Abdomen
The area within a few inches around your belly button (avoid the belly button)
  2. Thigh
The space between one hand above your knee and one hand below your groin, towards the outer side of the thigh

In these clinical skills you are tasked to administer a medication using the SC route. Please note of your manikin’s site and be sure you can administer it. If not asked your examiner before you start administering the medication. Please also note that this can be linked to your glucometer station. Be aware if it will be the same patient, same glucose result. If not, then you need to asked again during your scenario.
